[ 01 — FINANCIAL SERVICES ]

Systems for SACCOs, microfinance, insurance and fintech: auditable records, controlled access, and reporting that reconciles under a regulator.

[ 02 — CHALLENGES ]

What we hear most often

If three or more of these are familiar, the problem is usually one system short rather than one spreadsheet short.

  • Member or client records live in several systems that disagree with each other.
  • Reports for the regulator are assembled by hand, under time pressure, from exports.
  • Approvals and limits are enforced by convention rather than by the software.
  • There is no reliable audit trail of who changed what, and when.
  • Customer data sits in spreadsheets on laptops, which the Data Protection Act does not permit.

Financial services is where sloppy software stops being an inconvenience and starts being a liability.

Auditability is a feature, not a report

The question a regulator, an auditor or an angry member asks is always the same: who changed this, when, and on whose authority. If the answer requires somebody to reconstruct it from memory and exports, the system is not finished. We build the audit trail in from the start, because retrofitting one is both expensive and unconvincing.

Controls in the software, not in the culture

Limits, approvals and segregation of duties belong in code. "We always get a second signature" is a practice; a system that refuses to proceed without one is a control. The difference matters on the day somebody is in a hurry.

Data protection

The Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 and the GDPR both apply to a lot of what the sector handles. Practically that means knowing where personal data lives, keeping it only as long as there is a reason to, being able to export or delete it on request, and not having it on somebody's laptop. We design for those from the first schema rather than discovering them at an audit.
